Mastitis is inflammation of the breast, associated with breastfeeding. Symptoms typically include breast pain and redness. There is often an associated fever and general soreness. Onset is typically fairly rapid and usually occurs within the first few months of delivery.
Homeopathy can be very effective for the treatment of mastitis. The following are the most frequently indicated single remedies for this condition:
Phytolacca: The most frequently indicated homeopathic remedy for mastitis. The breasts are often lumpy and will be caked with hard knots and nodules.
Bryonia: Also a frequently indicated remedy for mastitis. The breast pain is worse after any kind of movement.
Belladonna: Mastitis with sudden onset, high fever and throbbing pain.
Lac Caninum: The breasts are so sensitive that even the touch of clothing against the breasts is excruciatingly painful
Hepar Sulphuris: The breast is extremely painful and worse if exposed to the least draft.
Silica: The breasts have painful cracks in the nipples. A major remedy for women with inverted nipples.
Dosage: Use a 30C potency (strength) of the indicated homeopathic remedy 2-3 times per day. After 24 hours, choose another remedy if there is no improvement. If the condition worsens, consult a health professional.

External Measures
The topical application of calendula cream will help unblock the milk ducts and heal the breast tissue.
Apply Heat and Cold: Try applying a moist heat pack (heating pad, rice pack, etc.) to the area of discomfort for 15 minutes before nursing baby. Read here on why using moist heat is the most effective. This can help loosen the clog so that you can nurse more effectively. After nursing, apply ice for 20 minutes to help reduce swelling. You can also take a warm epsom salt bath. Simply fill your tub with comfortably warm water and add 1-2 cups of epsom salt while the water is running to help it dissolve, grab your favorite book and relax! Try to stay in the bath for at least 10 minutes to get the full benefit of the epsom salt.
Massage: After applying moist heat, use some coconut or olive oil to massage the clogged duct. Using your fingertips, massage in a circle on the affected breast. You can also knead around the breast by gently using your knuckles. Remember to always massage inward toward the nipple to encourage the clog to make its way out via a let down.
